3% iron oxide absorbs light in the ultraviolet and blue regions of the spectrum, and reflects light in the red and infrared regions of the spectrum. The absorption of light by iron oxide is due to the presence of unpaired electrons in the iron atoms. These unpaired electrons can absorb photons of light with the same energy as the difference between the ground state and an excited state of the iron atom.
